I remember as a kid, hearing grown-ups say “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” I hoped it wasn’t true. Shouldn’t career achievement be based on your accomplishments, your intelligence, your talent?
Now, in a new century, in an entirely new connected reality, I read Seth’s blog, “Why bother having a resume?” On the surface Seth makes a great case for achievement and talent being the way to advance your career. But if you look at it again, the letters of recommendation, the reputation, the incisive blogging — it’s still who you know, or more accurately, who knows you.
