The Next Generation

I love Star Wars The Clone Wars.  I love sitting on the couch on a Friday night, enthralled with the new stories, alongside my daughter.   She wasn’t there, way back when the first movie came out, when we all ducked in our seats as the huge starship flew over.  But now she knows Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, like her mama, and plays Ahsoka Tano with her friends on the playground.

I can’t help but notice the parallels between Star Wars and Java.  JavaFX is the newest technology for Java, adding all kinds of new capabilities — like video and amphibious apps.  It’s cool to search for JavaFX on the web, and find videos from all over the world, developers talking about it, trying it out, showing each other how to use it.  I can envision a time when the games my daughter plays on her computer are written in JavaFX, the apps on my phone are in JavaFX, the videos I plug into my blog are shown with JavaFX, and the bonus features on our Blu-Ray movies are in JavaFX, too.

Star Wars the Clone Wars and JavaFX are great revivals, each bringing a wonderful innovation from the 20th century into the 21st.  Times like these, it’s actually fun to get old.
