Betrayal in the Kitchen

I had a Hansen’s soda with dinner tonight, and was intrigued by the prominent display of “Cane Sugar” and “No High Fructose Corn Syrup” on the label. I vaguely recalled that high fructose corn syrup was supposed to be bad for you, and wondered aloud, “What would it take for us not to have any high fructose corn syrup in the house?”

My husband checked the label of another favorite soda, Fresca, and declared, “None here. I’ll bet we’re pretty close already.” Since we’d pretty much cleared the fridge and pantry a few months back, I figured it’d be easy to check, so after dinner, I started checking. Which natural-looking foods would have the accused ingredient?

First betrayal — the soft Raley’s hot dog buns and Sara Lee hamburger buns. But the heftier Orowheat variety is okay. That’s interesting.

Second betrayal — the Heinz ketchup. Hey! Well, at least the Mt. Olive pickle relish doesn’t have any of the stuff.

Third and final betrayal — the Welch’s grape jam. WHAT? This isn’t fun anymore. Game over.

I spent 10 minutes or more today mixing the all natural Laura Scudder peanut butter. Years ago I stopped buying Jif, because I didn’t want partially hydrogenated vegetable oil in my PBJ, even though I grew up with Jif.

I guess I’m going to have to pay closer attention to the ingredient labels in the grocery store. I don’t take kindly to betrayal.

    Agreed! It’s pervasive and terrifying… like it’s hiding behind the oatmeal canister…
