Life is an endless series of choices. How do you choose to spend your time? How do you choose to spend your money? Whom do you choose to be with? Where do you choose to live? And on and on and on.
I decided to make “choice” the catchphrase for my new lifestyle. “Healthy choices” to be precise. I’m not into self-denial or martyrdom. Spoiled rotten is much more my style. So the trick has been to find new ways, healthy ways, to spoil myself rotten.
Like breakfast. Breakfast is a good thing, the experts say. Multigrain Cheerios are yummy. An all-fruit smoothie from Jamba Juice is delicious. Either qualifies as a healthy choice, and a tasty way to start the day.
Like dinner at a restaurant. Order something tasty, for sure. But make sure there’s a healthy choice included — a salad, a vegetarian dish, or fish. It’s not a big deal. It’s not radical. But I’ve noticed over the weeks that my cravings for the not-so-healthy choices have diminished.
I’ve found great ways to make healthy exercise choices too. Weekends give me time for laps in the pool, Pilates or Zumba or yoga classes, and family biking excursions. Weekdays are harder, but I can find 20 minutes in the morning three times a week to work on my core muscles. Not really fun, but I can’t deny the convenience, and I love the results.
I’m looking forward to spoiling myself rotten this summer. In a very healthy way. Won’t you join me?
